SOLAR ENERGY
In this lesson plan entitled "Solar Energy and Diversifying Energy Resources" found on the National Geographic website, the students will identify and evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of using solar farms as a renewable energy resource. They will also study a real case scenario and formulate a position statement with evidence either in support of or against solar farms. This will help the students understand the complex factors that play a role in making energy choices.
As an informal assessment, review students’ completed worksheet listing the benefits and drawback of the solar farm (which is provided on the website) to assess their understanding of the concept. Look for the inclusion of both positives and negatives about solar energy. Also, the website provides a Position Statement Rubric to assess students’ written position statements. Allow students to revise their statements based on feedback from the rubric.
