LETTER TO PARENTS
Dear Parent,
The eighth grade science class of North School will be learning about energy sources for the next six weeks. This is an exciting unit, as your child will not only learn about each resource but also study the real life advantages and disadvantages of using each energy source.
Within the next six weeks, your child will be asked to study their environment and make suggestions to improve energy efficiency. They will do a home energy audit, make suggestions for alternative fuel and transportation technology, investigate the issues associated with wind turbines and solar panels within the Chicago area, and study the impact of nuclear power plants in Illinois. At the end of the unity, they will also write a letter to both state and city officials with suggestions to improve energy efficiency, along with why and how to make these changes. As parents, I encourage you to support your child’s learning, ask questions about their projects, and assist him/her when needed with their research.
By studying energy sources through applying it to their real life, your child will be able to connect what is learned in the classroom with what they experience in their social environment. They will be engaged in their learning and science become fun and relevant. By making real suggestions to improve their environment, you child will feel empowered and realize that they have a role and responsibility in improving their society.
This is an exciting unit for your child, as it will not only be educational, but also engaging and empowering. If you have any questions about the curriculum, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Ms. Teacher
